International Migrant Day: a walk by the Basic Activist Kitchen

On Wednesday 18 December, the Basic Activist Kitchen will organize a walk in honor of International Migrant Day, starting at Moskeeplein and ending with a dinner in collaboration with Taste Before You Waste at BAK basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht.

International Migrant Day pays homage to the lives, rights and contributions of migrants to societies everywhere. This year we find ourselves in a migration crisis of proportions never known before.

During this walk we remember:
Those who are no longer among the living. Those who left their families to search for a better life, a better pay, a way to send their kids to school. Those who fled from their homes, when the bombs started to fall, away from the gunshots around the corner. Those who perished when they moved, got caught at the borders, drowned in the sea, suffocated in containers. Those who perished in the prisons they put them in when they didn’t have the right papers or explanation, where they took their lives awaiting deportation, Those living in limbo on and off the streets or out of loneliness and isolation that comes with life in a society that does not welcome them

Walk with us to grieve, to mourn those lost to these brutal policies.
Walk with us to stay awhile with the pain and the suffering, heavy to carry in body and mind, to heal, spark hope and resist together.

Starting location: Moskeeplein, Lombok
Ending location: Utrecht Centraal

To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023) involves a hybrid off- and online sequence of conversations and screenings around discursive and artistic interventions that reimagine the social implications of watching the war through ways that disrupt, subvert, resist the media’s incessant spectacularization of war.
