Lukáš Likavčan

Lukáš Likavčan is onderzoeker en theoreticus. Van origine opgeleid als filosoof gaat hij in op onderwerpen als filosofie van technologie, politieke ecologie en mediatheorie. Zich bewegend tussen de academische praktijk en een breed gebied tussen kunst en design, focust hij op infrastructurele voorwaarden van subjectiviteit, abstractie en verbeelding. Likavčan studeerde filosofie en Environmental Humanities aan Masaryk University, Brno, en Sociologie aan Boğaziçi University, Istanbul. Als onderzoeker was hij gevestigd aan de Weense University of Economics and Business, Wenen, de Polytechnische Universiteit Hong Kong, Hong Kong, en Strelka Instituut voor Media, Architectuur en Design, Moskou. Hij was tevens betrokken bij verschillende kunst- en designsamenwerkingen, zoals agent-gebaseerde simulatie alt’ai, http://altai.id, en is lid van het Collective for Ending Human Overspecialization.

Fellowship onderzoekstraject

Het project A Color of the Abstract is gesitueerd in een breder onderzoeksgebied over abstractiesystemen, en vormt een onderzoek naar de infrastructuren die abstractiesystemen in sociaaleconomische geschiedenis mogelijk maken. De filosofische grondgedachte van dit project ligt in fundamentele grondstellingen over het essentieel maatschappelijke karakter van subjectiviteit en rede. In navolging van filosoof Karl Marx is het mogelijk om historische, ruimtelijke en materiële beperkingen van subjectiviteit te identificeren. Materiële inbedding van rationele processen verandert abstractie in een politiek probleem, omdat de technologieën van abstractie de materiële realiteit vormgeven en als zodanig het bereik van mogelijke politieke interventies beïnvloeden.

Aangezien de fossiele brandstofindustrie in het Antropoceen een van de meest duidelijke aanstichters van de ecologische crisis is, is het achterhalen van de oorsprong van dit lange proces van abstractie cruciaal om te kunnen begrijpen hoe we ruimte kunnen maken voor transities naar post-kapitalistische toekomst(en). Dit onderzoek bekijkt de technologie van abstractie van fossiele brandstoffen via het verhaal van synthetische verftechnieken. Nieuwe kleuren zijn uitgevonden, die voorheen niet in de natuur voorkwamen. In de vorm van chemisch afval dat gepaard gaat met productie van chemische stoffen heeft de mens ook rivieren in de tinten rood, groen en blauw gekleurd. De synthetische verftechnieken vormen overkoepelende metaforen van kapitalistische abstractie die mogelijk gemaakt wordt door fossiele brandstoffen.
