Charl Landvreugd

Charl Landvreugd is een kunstenaar, schrijver en curator die werkt aan het in kaart brengen van een continentaal Europees artistiek milieu dat voortkomt uit migratie-esthetiek. Hij bevindt zich momenteel in de eindfase van zijn PhD-kandidatuur aan het Royal College of Art in Londen. In zijn dissertatie kijkt hij naar Nederlands Afro-burgerschap en saamhorigheid en de manier waarop dit tot uiting komt in hedendaagse kunst. Landvreugd behaalde een masterdiploma in Moderne Kunst/Critical Theory aan Columbia University, New York en een bachelordiploma in Fine Art/History of Art (joint hons.) aan Goldsmith College, Londen. Zijn sculpturen, fotografisch werk en videowerk zijn tentoongesteld in onder andere de Verenigde Staten, Suriname, Nederland en Senegal. Landvreugd’s teksten verschenen in tijdschriften zoals Small Axe, ARC Magazine en Open Arts Journal. Na de wereld te hebben rondgereisd woont hij nu in Rotterdam, de stad waar hij opgroeide en die zijn verbeelding blijft voeden.

Fellowship onderzoekstraject

(Culturele) Hybriditeit is een gegeven. Vanuit dit vertrekpunt is kunstenaar, schrijver, onderzoeker en curator Charl Landvreugd geïnteresseerd in het onderzoeken en zichtbaar maken van hoe een hedendaagse en toekomstige continentale Europese subjectiviteit eruit kan zien en hoe ‘het erbij horen’ is vormgegeven. Om die reden heeft Landvreugd in zijn recente werk en onderzoek, met inbegrip van een PhD, specifiek gekeken naar Nederlandse kunstenaars van Afrikaanse afkomst, omdat het label van huidskleur niet kan worden ontkend. Deze kunstenaars hebben overlevingsstrategieën in de kunstwereld ontwikkeld, waaronder de paradox van het performen van zwartheid terwijl ze daar niet op beoordeeld willen worden. Een nadere blik hierop laat zien dat dit effectief geldt voor veel kunstenaars (inclusief blanke, heteroseksuele, cis-gender mannen). De grote curatoriële vraag is hoe (kunstenaars met) een migrantenachtergrond centraal te stellen als bijdragend aan de toekomstige ontwikkeling van de Nederlandse/Europese maatschappij en (visuele) cultuur, in plaats van als een probleem dat moet worden opgelost (door nationalisme).

De belangrijkste focus van dit onderzoekstraject is het onderzoeken van en experimenteren met mogelijkheden die het huidige institutionele veld uitdagen, het opstellen van een plan om deze mogelijkheden in de praktijk te brengen, en vorm te geven aan de toekomst van deze praktijk gericht op de toekomst van continentale Europese subjectiviteiten.
