Bikewars: FreeShop/Workshop

Come to BAK, basis voor actuele kunst on Thursday 9 January 2020 for a FreeShop/Workshop in collaboration with Bikewars! Bikewars is a squatting collective which has been active in and around Utrecht for over ten years. They organize many social initiatives such as a “Free Shop” and a weekly vegan kitchen, cooking with vegetables that would otherwise be thrown away. The FreeShop/Workshop is organized by artist and current Bikewars resident Maja Bolier. Participants are invited to bring & take home clothes and materials, but also, and especially, to collaborate with several invited artists specialized in working with textiles and performance: Marian Genet, Rosa Maria van den Hove, and Dagobert Macib.Instead of the usual FreeShop act of taking or exchanging, we invite everyone to contribute in a different way, with a story or an action. In that way we want to play with and rethink the use of the items, in order to tell a new story. How can it bring us together? Is it possible to make a wearable tapestry that includes us all?????????????????????????????????: free We will end the day with a meal cooked by Bikewars Eetcafe. For further questions you can contact Maja Bolier via: aramina_25@hotmail.com

This program takes place in the context of project Trainings for the Not-Yet (14 September 2019–12 January 2020 at BAK), and is specifically organized as part of the activities program by the Basic Activist Kitchen, a group of Utrecht-based activists, artists, and researchers with backgrounds in theatre, art, squatting, organizing, anthropology, history, and gender studies, who through the course of Trainings for the Not-Yet organize daily cooking sessions and meals. They also invite fellow activists and organizers to organize their own events in the exhibition space.

Mi or Mie in Bahasa Indonesia means “noodles,” while mi in Chinese can mean “rice.” These over-indulgences of critical carbs are the workout diet for the Ultracirculation study group. Now in Yogyakarta, Critical Circulation Mi invites listeners into a guided soundscape with aurations by KUNCI Study Forum and Collective, School for Improper Education, Elaine W. Ho, and Wan Ing Que. While eating, listening, and reading, fieldwork-in-progress looking into the so-called “undocumented period” of the New Order Regime will be broadcast and unfolded in collaboration with participants in SOIE.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
