Mapping Histories: Conversing on Visuality and Subalternity

Lisa Ito

On 14 December 2018 art historian and activist Lisa Ito gives a workshop “Mapping Histories: Conversing on Visuality and Subalternity” as part of the Royal Academy of Art Non Linear Narrative master’s program. The workshop is held at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht in the framework of Propositions #7: Evidentiary Methods—the public program in the context of the exhibition Forensic Justice. The workshop is informed by the evidentiary method of reenactment and Ito’s experience with the Concerned Artists of the Philippines and the collective’s ongoing response to rising fascism through creating counter-narratives and establishing a broad base of cultural and social participation in the country’s anti-dictatorship struggle. The workshop aims to identify a shared sense of what narratives matter and to discern existing conceptual and visual tools for making sense of such stories and articulating these to publics beyond one’s own circles.

The Non Linear Narrative at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) is a two-year master’s program that merges investigative methods of journalism and forensics with processing technologies of computer science and visual arts.

Mi or Mie in Bahasa Indonesia means “noodles,” while mi in Chinese can mean “rice.” These over-indulgences of critical carbs are the workout diet for the Ultracirculation study group. Now in Yogyakarta, Critical Circulation Mi invites listeners into a guided soundscape with aurations by KUNCI Study Forum and Collective, School for Improper Education, Elaine W. Ho, and Wan Ing Que. While eating, listening, and reading, fieldwork-in-progress looking into the so-called “undocumented period” of the New Order Regime will be broadcast and unfolded in collaboration with participants in SOIE.

In all continents, people have built matriarchal cosmologies sustained by complex rituals. In the advent of main modern religions and after centuries of colonizing invasions, the goddesses of antiquity were suppressed by the patriarchal structures that consolidated our era. However, they found ways to speak to us in the language of patterns, melodies, and poems. This workshop uses the voice as a method to reveal the presence of goddesses.
