To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023)/Public Program

The public program as part of To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023) is a series of hybrid off- and online conversations and screenings around discursive and artistic interventions that reimagine the social implications of watching the war—through ways that disrupt, subvert, and resist the normalization of antagonistic conditions that enable and facilitate wars. Convened by researcher and film programmer Olexii Kuchanskyi and moderated by BAK curator of research and publications Wietske Maas, this program, hosted in English, takes place at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht and online on 28 September, 12 October, and 26 October 2023.

The Thursdays on which the public program takes place, the exhibition stays open until 21 hrs. 

Also on these Thursdays, there is a curator-led tour of the exhibition To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023) that precedes the public program at 17 hrs, given by Olexii Kuchanksyi. To register for the tour, please select it as an option when registering for the  public program.

To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023) is een bewegend beeldforum dat te zien is bij BAK, basis actuele kunst, Utrecht, van 9 September tot en met 29 Oktober 2023. Het forum is bijeengebracht vanuit de experimentele film- en videopraktijken in directe reactie op de oorlog op en in Oekraïne. Deze oorlog begon met de annexatie van de Krim door Rusland in 2014, na de Maidanopstand, en ontwikkelde zich tot een volledige invasie van Oekraïne in 2022 tot vandaag de dag.

Ultrasympathetic Ultratranslation: Re-Languaging Justice

Deze driedaagse bijeenkomst ontdekt de ruimte die ontstaat tussen taalgerechtigheid en “ultratranslation.” Het brengt vrienden, academici, activisten, taal werkers, strijders voor sociale rechtvaardigheid en culturele werkers – individuen en collectieven – samen, van hier en elders. Zij zijn degenen/ de mensen? die het alledaagse probleem van taal omvormen tot praktijken van verzet. Door middel van trainingen, optredens, filmvertoningen, presentaties, bijeenkomsten en voorbeelden van betere praktijken van vertalen, interpretatie en conversatie hoopt het symposium nieuwe stromen van relaties open te stellen. Mogelijk zal het symposium er niet in slagen sommige vragen te beantwoorden of een duidelijke analyse neer te zetten. Het zal eerder pogen een om een bewustwording te creëren om taal te verorberen en van binnenuit opnieuw te creëren. Het wijst ons niet op de noodzakelijkheid van taal, maar de noodzakelijkheid van talen- in andere woorden, de vele manieren waarop we zin geven aan de werelden om ons heen.

ULTRADEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL

Als een soort vervolg op Trainings for the Not-Yet (2019–2020), samengesteld door BAK en kunstenaar Jeanne van Heeswijk met meerdere collaborateurs in Utrecht en daarbuiten, experimenteert UPS met het idee van een tentoonstelling als een reeks trainingen, dit keer geconfigureerd als de basis van een tijdelijke school. Zeven studieknooppunten hebben maandenlang als faculteitsvertegenwoordigers van UPS outreach en veldwerk verricht om een curriculum samen te stellen dat is gebaseerd op het huidige landschap.
