Le Guess Who? at BAK

  • Yonatan Gat & The Eastern Medicine Singers live at Le Guess Who? 2018

This year, BAK is one of the festival locations of Le Guess Who?: a festival dedicated to showcasing boundary-crossing music from all over the world, questioning the existing and embraces the unknown. Le Guess Who? 2019 takes place from 7-10 November in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

During four days, Le Guess Who? takes over the entire city center of Utrecht with over 150 performances set to electrify pop venues, theaters, churches, galleries and warehouses. Satellite events with music, film, visual art, photography and markets appear at cafés, hotels, restaurants, wharf cellars, squares and the hidden corners of the city.

On top of hosting several of the festival’s events, BAK also collaborated with Le Guess Who? on a special program connected to BAK’s exhibition project Trainings for the Not-Yet. For this, Le Guess Who? and Jeanne van Heeswijk connected the Chicago-based pianist, clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid with visual artist, activist and womanist Patricia Kaersenhout. Together, they will give a collective performance on Friday 8 November, 14.00-16.00 – see more info here. Also, BAK’s current exhibition by Jeanne van Heeswijk is freely accessible to all Le Guess Who? festival visitors*.

Other Le Guess Who? events at BAK
On Friday 8 November, there will be a performance in the Auditorium by Vincent Moon & Priscilla Telmon, a collaborating multidisciplinary artist duo working as independent filmmakers and sound-explorers. Together they produce ethnographic experimental films and music recordings, based on material collected from their numerous travels. On Sunday 10 November, there are performances by Grimm Grimm, Ed Dowie and Group Listening.

*Please note: the work in the auditorium, Acts of Balance by Jeanne van Heeswijk & Afrikaanderwijk Cooperative, will not be on view during the weekend of Le Guess Who?

To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023)/Public Program

To Watch the War: The Moving Image Amidst the Invasion of Ukraine (2014–2023) involves a hybrid off- and online sequence of conversations and screenings around discursive and artistic interventions that reimagine the social implications of watching the war through ways that disrupt, subvert, resist the media’s incessant spectacularization of war.
