Çağlar Keyder is Professor of Sociology at the Ataturk Institute for Modern Turkish History, Bogaziçi University, Istanbul and SUNY-Binghamton, Binghamton, NY. His academic research focuses on the Ottoman Empire, the contemporary Middle East and Turkey, and on the social structure of global cities. He is co-editor of Spatial Conceptions of the Nation: Modernizing Geographies in Greece and Turkey (2010); and Ways to Modernity in Greece and Turkey: Encounters with Europe, 1850–1950 (2007). Recent essays include: “A Brief History of Modern Istanbul,” The Cambridge History of Modern Turkey (2008); “Europe and the Ottoman Empire in Mid-Nineteenth Century,” East Meets West: Banking and Commerce in the Ottoman Empire, ed.
