Un(fore)seen Cultures: Mapping the Urban Contemporary in Hong Kong and the Netherlands

In collaboration with

On Friday 3 June 2016 BAK hosts Un(fore)seen Cultures. A result of the research exchange between students from the Humanities Honours Program (Utrecht University) and the Common Core Ambassadors (Hong Kong University), the afternoon presents a series of projects that aim to explore urban life in the 21st century. With a keen interest in all forms of otherness—often invisible, yet in every way present in the city today—the event invites a rethinking of the urban contemporary from refugees and immigrants, to the rise of the digital, to the many different virtual futures as we’ve sensed them at work in Hong Kong and in the Netherlands. With student presentations, a roundtable discussion with prominent guests, and a debate on the urban im/possible, the aim of the day is to realize a research lab on the un(fore)seen negotiations that make the city today.

With contributions by: all the students that are part of the research exchange between Utrecht University and Hong Kong University; Maria Hlavajova (BAK); Yoonis Osman Nuur (We Are Here); prof. Gray Kochhar Lindgren (Hong Kong University); and others.

Chaired by: dr. Rick Dolphijn (Utrecht University)
