Ultrastudio Third Session

Community Portal presents… A series of practical publishing workshops organized by the Bookbinding Studio of Sandberg Instituut/Rietveld Academy and Lila Athanasiadou. This workshop is part of a more extensive series of components assembling the fieldwork for Ultradependent Public School.

The workshop
…is hosted by an active squat and anarchist social center in Amsterdam.

…is held by the Book Binding Studio (BB) of the Sandberg Instituut/Rietveld Academy. After making paper for the last two sessions, BB will now experiment with using this paper as a container for new endeavors. Our lovely hosts will follow afterward with a workshop on ad hacking and subvertising.

…is part of the Ultradependent Public School (UPS) curriculum of BAK, Basis voor actuele kunst’s Community Portal.  (01 April–27 May 2023).
Since October 2022, seven study groups have been doing fieldwork towards BAK Community Portal’s first large-scale public project— Ultradependent Public School (UPS), which opens from 01 April–27 May 2023.

ULTRADEPENDENT PUBLIC SCHOOL unfolds as the public negotiation of a curriculum to learn what we really need to enact the worlds we really want. UPS is co-convened with an extended faculty of students, educators, and practitioners. UPS inhabits the edges between formal classrooms and everyday life while emphasizing study as radically collective and the public labor that lives in-between institutionalized hierarchies. It navigates kitchens, print studios, housing squats, community centers, garages, radio stations, hallways, public transportation, and sidewalks as sites of study.

ULTRASTUDIO is one of the curricular nodes at Ultradependent Public School (UPS), led by the question of how to build livable communities through the political act of publishing. It is configured as a series of knowledge exchanges between print workshops, squatting communities, and housing rights advocates across the Netherlands. Ultrastudio is convened by two friendly satellites: the Book Binding Studio of the Sandberg Institute/Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam—with Miquel Hervás Gómez and Ott Metusala—and cultural worker Lila Athanasiadou.
The facilitators
BB (2008, Amsterdam). The Bookbinding Workshop at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Insituut is a workspace that allows the production of books and publications in small editions and specific manipulations of paper and cardboard. Next to being a technical workshop, the BB workshop also functions as a cross-departmental point in our institution. We believe the publishing practice is an emancipatory process.

Miquel Hervás Gómez
Miquel Hervás Gómez (1985, Terrassa). Graphic designer and educator based on the WWW. Tutor for Disarming Design at the Sandberg Instituut and Preparatory Course at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Workshop manager at the BB. Active member of fanfare and former Carne Kids.

Ott Metusala
Ott Metusala (1988, Tallinn) is a graphic designer based in Amsterdam. Mainly working on applied and self-initiated projects, he is currently also workshop manager at the BB Workshop and publisher as Catalog.

Lila Athanasiadou
Lila Athanasiadou (1989, Athens) is a cultural worker, researcher, and architect whose practice spans from visual and audio essays to teaching encounters and cultural activism. She is currently teaching Social Practices at Willem de Kooning Academy.
