Repairing Towels
a workshop on practices of care, empowerment and public/private space
hosted by Vasilia Sofroniou
for the b.ASIC a.CTIVIST k.ITCHEN
Moving through public space often means a constant, invisible negotiation of safety and confidence, tactics that many of us carry but rarely share collectively. This workshop opens space for that sharing.
We'll start with a collective discussion and mapping exercise, reflecting on the tactics we use to navigate public space and the knowledge we want to pass on to one another. From there, we'll translate what emerges into symbols and phrases, embroidering them onto kitchen towels, first individually, then joining our threads together as a group.
The kitchen towel, an object of domestic and gendered labor, becomes a vessel for collective knowledge. It becomes a heritage of resilience, meant to be used, washed, and given away, carrying its embroidered knowledge into other kitchens, other hands.
No embroidery experience is necessary.
Bring your kitchen towels, your favourite embroidery tools/threads (if you have any). Basic embroidery materials will be provided.
