On Unequal Exchange

presentation and collective discussion
organized in the context of Assembling in Resistance
with the Anti-Imperialist Network NL

Why is the world divided into poor and rich and countries? What makes our lives here in the Global North so comfortable while it drowns the countries of the Global South into poverty, war and migration? Why are the most resource - rich countries facing poverty and genocide?

In this event with the Anti -Imperialist Network we will explore the theory of Unequal Exchange - or Imperialism of trade - which exposes the inherent inequality within the capitalist market system, favouring a few while impoverishing others. During this event, the Anti-Imperialist Network will give a presentation on the topic and its effect on global inequalities, solidarity and strategy. Afterwards, we will discuss strategies for practical forms of solidarity. It is a relevant topic for anti-imperialists, revolutionaries, socialists and other activists who want to root their solidarity practice as much in theory as in practice and covers themes such as ecology, political economy and socialism.

The theory of Unequal Exchange argues that global trade drains value from poor countries in the periphery to rich countries in the imperialist core. When commodities and labour from poorer countries are undervalued in price, while those from developed countries are overpriced – it leads to a non-equivalent exchange of labour hours. The majority of people in the imperialist core have an interest in upholding their high wages and living conditions and consequentially, upholding Imperialism. This has major impact on organising solidarity, revolutionary activity and its strategies.

How do we, as activists in the Global North, embed our practices of solidarity in practicality, transecting mere words? How do we stand with our comrades in the Global South and how can we fight for another future collectively across territories?

This event is walk-in and open to all
Suggested donation is between €3-12

About Assembling in Resistance

Assembling in Resistance is a programmatic line curated by artist and organizer Iliada Charalambous. During these gatherings, participants learn together about forms of coming together in and for resistance by reading collectively with and about diverse resistance movements, alternative forms of (self)governance and assembling.

How can we apply what we learn in the context of Basecamp?
